The shaded area is where ORE has been working most intensely over the past 20 years and has built up a strong network of farmers, farmer groups, associations and families in the communities.
The town of Camp Perrin, located 16 miles from the departmental capital of Les Cayes, and 120 miles from Port-au-Prince is one of Haiti’s most important rural markets. The commune of Camp Perrin has about 45,000 inhabitants and comprises 82.6 square miles. Camp Perrin’s elevation is 807 ft above sea level.
The surrounding areas are some of the most fertile and productive in Haiti. The plain, La Plaine des Cayes, is partially irrigated and produces large quantities of staple crops as well as mangos. The humid mountains to the north and west produce fruits and vegetables and other major staple crops such as yams. The region supplies food locally, for largely for Port-au-Prince and occasionally for export.
Les Cayes is Haiti’s third largest city with a population of over 60,000.
